Let’s get down to it: People like to smell things. People like scents on their bodies, including scented lotion, hairspray, hair gel, mousse,  deodorant, cologne, scented shaving gel, soaps, body sprays, and shampoo. The perfume industry is a multi-billion dollar business. We even like our clothing to smell good. We use scented laundry detergent, fabric softeners,  dryer sheets, and scented drawer satchels so that our clothes can smell “mountain fresh” or like “calming lavender”. Consumers spend millions of dollars a year on home fragrance sprays, potpourri, and fragrance oil burners. There are entire stores dedicated to scents, including Bath and Body Works, Yankee Candle, and Candle Barn. We even buy scented air fresheners to place in our cars. A final example of scents being used in retail is the use of scents on toys. Along with scratch and sniff stickers, the 80’s brought us Strawberry Shortcake and Cabbage Patch dolls, which were scented like strawberry, and baby powder, respectively. Over twenty years later, Strawberry Shortcake and Cabbage Patch dolls are still being sold. In addition, visit any toy store chain today, like Toys R Us, and you will see that many, if not most, of the dolls being sold today are scented. Also from the 80’s, Sanrio, Inc. brought us scented pencils, stationery, and erasers. Why? Because people like to smell things!
